Polypeptide: most hypothalamic hormones/ hormones of pituitary/ hormones of pancreas and GI tract

Steroid: hormones of adrenal cortex

Amines: thyroid hormones/ catecholamine

Polypeptides and amines hormones need first messenger at membrane receptor for activation of cAMP dependent protein kinases which lead to activation (e.g.via phosphorylase kinase) or inactivation (e.g.via glycogen synthetase) of the substrate
*Except: thyroid hormones
Steroid and thyroid hormones exert their function via binding of hormone to receptor protein in cytosol of target cells due to their permeability through cell membrane.
